What is the MTC?
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory test taken by every Year 4 child in state-funded schools in England. It happens in a two-week window in early June.
Each pupil answers 25 multiplication questions on a tablet or computer. Each question is multiplication facts from the 2× to the 12× tables. They have 6 seconds to answer each question, with 3 seconds of rest in between. The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes.
There is no “pass mark” published by the Department for Education, and no national threshold to hit. Schools use the result to spot children who need more support with their times tables — not to pass or fail anyone. The check is deliberately weighted towards the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables, so those are the ones worth practising.
